Events at Frozen Dead Guy Days 2009, cont. * Nederlands, Colorado
As the three day festival continues, on Saturday afternoon of March 7th, with the 1:00-2:00 pm Polar Plunge in the kids’ pond in Chipeta Park where dozens of brave souls stripped down to their nickers and dove into a hole cut in the ice for a sensationally frigid experience that required two paramedics in wet suits on hand for safety. The expressions of the faces were memorable. Some of the costumes were fabulous – such as the pimp, Superman, the viking duet, and the zombie. Great fun. From 2:00-3:30 – a bit different from Manitou Springs’ infamous Emma Crawford Coffin Races, Frozen Dead Guy brings their own style of races in Chipeta Park with up to 30 teams racing with coffins through a course of obstacles including mud, snow, and playground slides. From 2:00-5:00 the Frozen Dead and Living Poets Society brings together some spectacular prose. 3:30-4:30 a Mountain Grass band called “Mountain Standard Time” brings acoustics out in the tent; followed by the Frozen Doughball Toss at 4:30 where you get to throw a “blue ball” through a life size cutout of Grandpa. From 5:00-7:00 some folk/alternative tunes with a gypsy, funk sound come to you by the Elephant Revival Concept . Then Pack your Pants at 5:30 to see how much snow you can pack in a pair of pants. At 6:30 the Frozen T-shirt contest takes place, followed by the infamous 6:30-1:00 am Grandpa’s Pub Crawl hitting all of Nederland’s hot spots involving lots of live music. Sunday the 8th brings another Pancake breakfast at 8:00 am, followed by an 11:00 am Hands on costume and portraits session; also Jaden Carlson with Radioactive bringing great music in the open tent; followed by the Sundance Salmon Toss and Sunday brunch. Dog House Video shows a repeat viewing of “Grandpa’s in the Tuff Shed” from 11-4. Jazz/Rock Fusion shakes it with Fat Rabbit at 1:30. Down for some Beach volleyball tournement at the Mexican Grill at 3:00, and the Blue Ball Eating Contest where you try to eat as many rocky mountain oysters as possible for great prizes. The event wraps up at 5:00 pm with the closing ceremony. Rating: 4 stars out of 5.
